EVANSTON, Ill. -- The postseason accolades continue to roll in for Northwestern sophomore Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos), who Monday was named a second-team Longstreth/NFHCA All-American.
One of the most prolific scorers in NCAA field hockey this season, Armstrong becomes Northwestern's first NFHCA All-American since 2004 when Candice Cooper also was named to the second team. Prior to Cooper, NU's last All-American selection came following the 1996 campaign.
Already the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, first-team All-West Region and first-team All-Big Ten, Armstrong adds second-team All-American to her growing list of career accolades. She set career highs and led all Big Ten players with 24 goals and 60 points this season, finishing the year ranked third nationally with 3.16 points per game. Her 60 points on the year up her two-year total at NU to 116 -- good for fourth all-time at Northwestern -- while her 46 goals leave her fifth in school history.
Armstrong racked up seven game-winning goals during the 2010 season, perhaps none bigger than in the late stages of a 3-2 Wildcat win against sixth-ranked Ohio State on Sept. 24. She also tallied two four-goal games, one of which came in NU's 4-2 victory over Big Ten rival Iowa on Oct. 24.
Armstrong is one of only four players out of the Big Ten to land on either the NFHCA's first or second-team All-American squads, joining Aisling Coyle (Ohio State), Kelsey Amy (Penn State) and Ayla Halus (Penn State).
