EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's dynamic front-line scoring tandem of sophomore Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) and freshman Nikki Parsley (Milford, Del./Milford) each were selected to the All-West Region team by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the NFHCA announced Thursday.
Armstrong was named first-team All-Region for the second consecutive season while Parsley received second-team accolades in her rookie season. It marks the first time since 2004 that two NU players were named to the All-Region squad in the same season.
Armstrong, the 2010 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, set career highs and led all Big Ten players with 24 goals and 12 assists this season en route to finishing the year ranked third nationally with 3.16 points per game. Her 60 points on the year up her two-year total at NU to 116 -- good for fourth all-time at Northwestern -- while her 46 goals leave her fifth in school history.
Parsley, meanwhile, served as the perfect complement to Armstrong up top, starting all 20 games in her rookie year and scoring eight goals -- good for second on the team -- and adding five assists. Her season high of five points came against Saint Louis on Sept. 12 and Parsley capped off her first season in Evanston by scoring the lone goal in NU's Big Ten Tournament contest vs. Michigan State.
Together, Armstrong and Parsley accounted for more than half 32 of Northwestern's 62 goals scored this season. Both will return to lead the Wildcat attack in 2011 when NU will be looking to continue momentum gained after winning 23 games over the last two seasons.
