EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern returned to the strips at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) this past weekend, hosting the 2010 USFA Remenyik Open. A trio of Wildcats notched medals over the two-day event as Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) placed second in the foil with Karalina Collins (Houston, Texas/Waltrip) and Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) finishing third in the epée and sabre, respectively.
Patterson raced through poll play and direct elimination before falling 15-11 to former teammate Sam Nemecek in the championship bout. She improves on her sixth-place finish in last year's Remenyik and was one of four Wildcats to place among the top-10. Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) finished sixth for Northwestern with Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) placing eighth and Irisa Chen (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) checking in at 10th out of 50 competitors.
In the women's epée, Collins tied Courtney Dumas in the bronze position, improving on her sixth-place finish from a year ago. Collins was one of three Northwestern fencers to finish among the top-10 in the epée, sitting five spots ahead of eighth-place Kendrick Mooney (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia). Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) finished 10th out of 39 competitors for the Wildcats.
Grainger, coming off an ACL injury last season, had an impressive showing this weekend for Northwestern, tying for the third and moving up two spots from her fifth-place finish in 2009. Lisa Sachs (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Jill Mahen (Chester, N.J./Mendham) notched top-10 finishes for the Wildcats as well, placing fifth and eighth respectively -- both of which are career bests.
After a week off, Northwestern next heads to University Park, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open on Saturday, Nov. 13. That tournament will serve as a nice warm-up before a number of Wildcats compete in the USFA Junior North American Cup in Milwaukee, Wis., from Friday, Nov. 19 through Monday, Nov. 22.
