EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opened up its 2010-11 season with a successful showing at the USFA Burton Open, held at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) on the Northwestern campus. 16 different Wildcats placed among the top-10 in their respective weapons, including a pair of gold medalists.

In the women's epée, Northwestern dominated the top-10, placing seven fencers among the mix and being led by Kate Cavanaugh's second-place finish. Karalina Collins and Madeline Sachs tied for the bronze, with Sara Peck checking in at fifth. Kendrick Mooney and Hannah Schwalbe tied for seventh, with teammate Nicole placing ninth.

Devynn Patterson, an NCAA qualifier in 2009, started her junior campaign in convincing style, placing first among the women's foil to earn the gold, holding off teammate Camille Provencal, who placed second. Irisa Chen checked in at eighth for the Wildcats, followed by Emily Bruhl's ninth-place showing.

Northwestern swept through the medals in the women's sabre, highlighted by a gold medal finish by Chloe Grainger. Jill Mahen earned the silver with Annelise Eeman checking in at third as both fencers attained their C2010 rating in the process.

A pair of Wildcats also posted impressive showings competing in the mixed competition, highlighted by freshman Dina Bazarbayeva's seventh-place showing in the mixed epée, with Provencal placing ninth in the mixed foil, four spots better than Patterson.

Up next for Northwestern is the USFA North American Cup, taking place Friday, Oct. 15 through Monday, Oct. 18 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Wildcats then return to the strips in Evanston, competing in the USFA Remenyik Open on Oct. 30 and 31.
