EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team heads south down Ridge Avenue Wednesday evening as it faces Loyola Chicago in a nonconference matchup. The contest gets underway at 7 p.m. and is being video-streamed live at HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv.
The Wildcats are 18-4-7 all-time against the Ramblers, including an unblemished 8-0-2 under head coach Tim Lenahan. On Oct. 20 of last season in Evanston, a goal by Matt Eliason in the 83rd minute was the difference as NU earned a 1-0 victory. Misha Rosenthal made five saves to earn the shutout.
Despite all of the Wildcats' recent success against Loyola, the series has been tightly contested. Only three of those last 10 meetings have been decided by two or more goals. NU advanced past the Ramblers in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, winning in a shootout following a scoreless tie.
Northwestern is coming off a solid performance in a 1-1 home tie against Penn State on Sunday. The Wildcats fell behind 39 minutes in on the 13th tally of the season by Corey Hertzog, the nation's goal-scoring leader. However, NU bounced back just 41 seconds later on a goal by Kyle Schickel off assists from Scott Lakin and Piero Bellizzi. Drew Kotler made three saves in goal for Northwestern which was out-shot 18-13 but held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Ramblers (3-7-2, 3-1-1 Horizon League) suffered their first conference loss of the season Saturday, falling 1-0 to Milwaukee on a goal with just 1:16 remaining in double overtime. Eric Nock leads Loyola with four goals, while James Howe has a team-leading three assists. Peter McKeown has played the entire season in goal for the squad and sports a 1.03 goals-against average and a .690 save percentage.
Wednesday's contest is the first of three consecutive on the road for Northwestern after playing five in a row at home.
