EVANSTON, Ill. -- A nailbiting victory over Midwest Conference rival and sixth-ranked Ohio State highlighted another successful day for Northwestern at the NU Duals as the Wildcats post a perfect 6-0 mark Sunday, finishing the Duals with a 12-1 record. Northwestern improves to 26-3 on the year while upping its season record against ranked teams to 7-3.
The Wildcats met up with the Buckeyes in the day's fourth round and used a strong 8-1 performance from the epee squad to help seal the victory. Ohio State earned the advantage in both the foil (5-4) and the sabre (6-3), but Northwestern had enough points to overtake its conference rival, marking the first victory for the Wildcats over the Buckeyes since a 17-10 decision back on Feb.1, 2004.
"It was a great victory for these girls and one that has been a long time coming," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "Ohio State has really been a thorn in our side for the past few years. We always match up well against them but for whatever reason just can't get over the top. But we certainly will enjoy this one."
Northwestern, which went 6-1 in the first day of the NU Duals, opened up Sunday morning with a 19-8 victory over Stanford, then posted a pair of 20-7 decisions against both UC San Diego and Duke. Following the victory over the Buckeyes, the Wildcats closed out their home tournament with a 22-5 win over Cal Tech and a 17-10 decision against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Individually, it was freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown Friends) who led Northwestern in victories, posting a 16-5 record on the weekend in helping the sabre squad to a 10-3 mark. Junior Jill Mahen (Chester, N.J./Mendham) was also strong the entire weekend, finishing with a 15-2 record while senior Allie Keller (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) went 13-8 for the 'Cats.
A trio of foilists posted double-digit win totals at the Duals, led by a dozen victories for the sophomore duo of Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central). Freshman Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapid, Mich./Forest Hills Central) added 11 of her own as the foil team joined both the sabre and epee squads with a 10-3 record over the weekend.
Among the epeeists, it was senior Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) that paced the Northwestern attack, finishing with a 12-5 record including three key victories against Ohio State. Sister Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and freshman Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) each recorded nine victories at the NU Duals.
The Wildcats are back on the road this coming weekend, but won't have to travel far as Northwestern makes the short journey to South Bend, Ind., competing in the Notre Dame Duals on Saturday, Feb. 6 and Sunday, Feb. 7. Northwestern heads into the two-day event needing just four victories for its sixth-consecutive 30-victory seasons.
