EVANSTON, Ill. -- After winning two of three doubles matches, No. 2 Northwestern flexed its muscle in singles play to defeat No. 53 Old Dominion, 6-1, in the first qualifying round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championship Saturday in Evanston. NU, which is serving as one of 15 regional sites around the country for ITA Kick-Off Weekend, secured its spot in the next round of qualifying against Princeton.
That match will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in Combe Tennis Center.
On Saturday, Northwestern scored its first win of the morning at No. 2 doubles where Maria Mosolova and Brittany Wowchuk trounced the ODU duo of Marija Citic and Juliana Pires, 8-2. Mosolova put away the match's final point with an overhead slam as she and Wowchuk improved to 2-0 in duals.
NU's clinching doubles point came courtesy of Samantha Murray and Kate Turvy at No. 3 as they knocked off Irina Dementyeva and Diana Ivanova, 8-3.
Saturday's No. 1 doubles match was tightly contested, with Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum and Joanna Dobrowolska leading NU's Lauren Lui and Elena Chernyakova through much of the match. Trailing 7-5, the Wildcat tandem pulled within 7-6 before Fahoum and Dobrowolska closed out the match 7-6.
After suffering the loss at No. 1 doubles, Chernyakova rebounded in impressive fashion in singles, needing only 15 minutes to win her first set, 6-0, against Citic at fifth singles. She cruised again in the second set to win 6-0, winning her second dual match in as many tries this season.
Soon after, it was Lui who won her No. 3 singles match by a 6-2, 6-0 decision against Dementyeva to give NU a 3-0 lead.
Turvy was nearly as efficient at No. 4 singles, taking her first set 6-0 against Ivanova. Things were a little tighter in the second, with Ivanova breaking a Turvy service game to pull within 3-2, but both were able to hold over the next two games as Turvy remained in control up 4-3. Turvy notched a big break after several deuce points in the next game and closed out the set 6-3 to clinch the match for the 'Cats.
Playing No. 2 singles, Murray dropped her opening game to Dobrowolska but came back to win the next five, eventually winning the set 6-2. She pulled away once again in the second to post another 6-2 set victory.
At No. 1, Mosolova took on the 21st-ranked Fahoum, who Mosolova defeated in three sets in their meeting at the ITA National Indoor Singles Championship in November. Fahoum came back from a 3-2 deficit to go ahead 4-3 and went on to take a 6-4 decision in the first set. Things remained neck and neck in the second, with Mosolova holding serve to tie things at four through eight games. After Fahoum held to go up 5-4, she was able to close out the victory in the ensuing game to score the Monarchs' only point of the match.
Immediately after the conclusion of Mosolova's match, NU's Stacey Lee put the finishing touches on her 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Pires. Lee improved her career singles record to 27-7 with the win.
