EVANSTON, Ill. -- Second-ranked Northwestern made quick work of No. 45 Princeton Sunday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center, sweeping the Tigers 4-0 to advance to the round of 16 of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by Wisconsin. Freshman Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ont./Oakville Trafalgar) clinched the dual with a win at No. 6 singles.

The Wildcats continue their title defense of the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championship when they were the first-ever northern team to win the event.

NU kicked off the dual with two dominant performances at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At the top spot, Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Elena Chernyakova (Moscow, Russia/No. 150) posted an 8-3 victory over the Tigers' Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable.

The 'Cats took the 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at No. 2 by Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) and Wowchuk over Princeton's Rachel Saiontz and Monica Chow. The 'Cats took a 5-1 lead and carried the momentum through the match.

No. 3 doubles between Stacey Lee (Old Westbury, N.Y./Wheatley) and Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) and the Tigers' Sarah Hoffman and Melissa Saiontz was left unfinished.

Northwestern continued its solid play into singles where Mosolova dominated Hilary Bartlett, 6-2, 6-1, to quickly give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead.

Lee followed suit at No. 5 singles, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors to take the match over Princeton's Taylor Marable, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Wowchuk clinched it for the 'Cats with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Blakely Ashley at No. 6.

The remaining three singles matches were left unfinished, but Northwestern was fighting back in all of them. At No. 3, Lui was down a break early in the first set before breaking back and eventually taking the set, 7-5.

Murray and Turvy each dropped the first set of their respective matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. However, Murray stormed back to take the second set of her match and Turvey was up 4-0 in hers when play was stopped.

The Wildcats are back in action at Combe Tennis Center at 11 a.m. on Feb. 7 when they host Florida State.
