Furman Fall Invitational -- Final Results
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- On the final day of competition at the season-opening Furman Fall Invitational, Northwestern junior Maria Mosolova and senior Samantha Murray completed their bids for singles titles in flights one and five, respectively. Additionally, sophomore Elena Chernyakova wrapped up a 2-1 weekend with a second-place showing in flight seven.
Mosolova, the nation's top-ranked singles player this preseason, faced 27th-ranked Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee in what proved to be a three-set final. Mosolova and Whoriskey split a pair of 6-3 decisions in the opening set before Mosolova edged the Volunteer 6-4 in the deciding set to repeat as a singles champion at the Furman Invite.
After winning a doubles crown on Saturday, 40th-ranked Murray took to the courts Sunday in search of a singles title against South Carolina's Miljana Jocic. Murray took the first set 6-3 before coasting past Jocic in the second, 6-0, to win flight five. With her 3-0 performance this weekend, Murray improved her overall career singles record to 107-33.
In flight seven, Chernyakova came up against Florida State's Jessica Wente in the title match but could not find her stride against the Seminole, losing 6-2, 6-2 to finish in the runner-up spot.
In other action, freshman Kate Turvy met a difficult opponent Sunday in her flight four third place match, facing North Carolina's 79th-ranked Sophie Grabinski. The Tar Heel managed to find the break of serve she needed in the second set to overcome Turvy, 6-2, 6-4.
Senior and 89th-ranked Lauren Lui also took seventh place in flight two by downing Dijana Stocic of South Carolina 6-2, 7-6 (2). The win was the 100th singles victory (against only 33 losses) in a successful career for Lui, who has consistently filled the No. 4 spot in NU's dual lineup the past three seasons.
Sophomore Stacey Lee overpowered Furman's Jessica Preeg in her match for seventh place in flight three, sweeping past Preeg 6-0, 6-0. Lee is coming off a freshman season in which she posted an impressive 20-2 overall singles mark for the Wildcats.
Next on the fall schedule for Northwestern is the All-American Championships tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., where Mosolova has earned the No. 1 overall singles seed. Prequalifying action begins this weekend with main draw competition getting underway on Thursday, Oct. 8.
