Furman Invitational Day Two -- Complete Results
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Northwestern spent the second day of competition at the Furman Fall Invitational vying for doubles titles and saw its tandem of senior Samantha Murray and freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova come away with the flight three championship. Murray and Abu Mushrefova cruised past Florida State's Jessica Wente and Amy Sargeant in the final, winning by an 8-0 shutout.
The NU duo reached the championship match by defeating South Carolina's Adriana Pereira and Miljana Jocic in the semis, 8-4.
Another Wildcat pairing, freshman Brittany Wowchuk and sophomore Elena Chernyakova, advanced to the finals of the flight two bracket thanks to an 8-2 win over Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski of North Carolina. In the final, the 'Cats ran into the seventh-ranked doubles team in the country in Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota and dropped an 8-3 decision.
In flight two, senior Lauren Lui and sophomore Stacey Lee fought to a fifth-place finish with a pair of 8-6 victories. After dropping their opening match of the tournament on Friday, Lui and Lee downed South Carolina's Josefin Andersson and Dijana Stocic to begin doubles play on Saturday. In the fifth-place match, the Wildcats proved too much for Florida State's Lauren Macfarlane and Federica Suess.
In additional doubles play, the NU tandem of Maria Mosolova and Kate Turvy lost an 8-4 decision to Francesca Segarelli and Bonny Davidson of Florida State.
Northwestern concludes play at the Furman Fall Invitational on Sunday as Mosolova (flight one), Murray (flight three) and Chernyakova (flight seven) compete for tournament titles and a number of other Wildcats look to leave South Carolina on a winning note.
