DeKALB, Ill. -- Northwestern capitalized on five top-10 finishes by its runners by winning the 2009 Huskies Open hosted by Northern Illinois Saturday in DeKalb, Ill. Freshman Allegra Mayer (19:06.26) crossed the finish line first for NU and third overall while classmate Audrey Huth (19:25.04) came up with a sixth-place overall finish in the first race of her Wildcat career.
Saturday's meet marked the inaugural 5K race of the season for Northwestern, but the Wildcats were clearly up for the added distance. The 'Cats came away from the meet in first place in the team standings thanks to its low point total of 35. Western Illinois finished a distant second with 79 points while Wisconsin-Milwaukee nabbed third with 89 points.
The meet victory was the first for NU since vanquishing a 32-field at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational last season.
"We took advantage of the level of competitiveness of this race and planned a much more strategic 'team race' than last week," said NU head coach April Likhite. "The course was much more challenging than I had anticipated but we stepped up and had some impressive individual finishes. I am very pleased with freshmen Allegra Mayer as she once again pushed the pace for our young squad.."
Sophomore Rachel Kaminski (19:25.65) placed seventh overall--the third top-10 finish of her career--by crossing only six tenths of a second behind Huth while Hallie Busta was ninth with her time of 19:37.54. Rounding out the top 10 was senior Paulina Garcia in 19:39.53.
Northwestern is back in action on Sept. 26 when it splits the squad to compete at both the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis and the Forester Invitational in Vernon Hills, Ill.
