EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern and UW-Parkside battled in men's soccer exhibition action at Lakeside Field Thursday evening. The Wildcats and the Rangers played a pair of 40-minute periods followed by a third 20-minute frame.
The Wildcats jumped on the board first as junior forward Matt Eliason was able to one-time home a service from senior Mark Blades from the right flank at the 16:43 mark.
The Rangers battled back in the second period, though, as NU substituted liberally. UW-Parkside tallied a pair of goals after the first intermission to take a one-goal advantage over the first 80 minutes of play. The Wildcats nearly tied things up with just over three minutes remaining, but Jamie Liberman made a diving save on Blades' free kick from 20 yards out.
Northwestern notched its second goal of the contest during the final 20-minute period, scoring on an indirect free kick by Piero Bellizzi.
The Wildcats finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots over the open 80 minutes of action.
The Wildcats return to action on Monday when they travel to Notre Dame for their second of three exhibition contests prior to the start of the regular season.
