CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Northwestern's showdown with eighth-ranked North Carolina has ended almost before it began, as heavy rains in the Chapel Hill area and poor field conditions forced the game to be canceled. North Carolina held a 4-2 lead with 19:25 remaining in the first half when officials deemed the field unsafe to play, as about two inches of standing water covered the field. The forecast for the next few days doesn't look good, as the Chapel Hill area is under a winter storm warning with up to four inches of snow possible over the next 24 hours. The teams will attempt to schedule a make-up date for later on in the season. Junior Danielle Spencer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and freshman Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) tallied the goals for the 'Cats.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, March 7, facing ninth-ranked Georgetown in Washington, D.C. It will mark the second straight season the two will go head-to-head in the Friends of Jaclyn Brain Tumor Awareness Challenge, as NU edged the Hoyas 7-6 last season in Evanston. Opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
