SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- One day after seeing a number of Wildcat fencers earn high marks in the Midwest Conference Championships individual competition, seventh-ranked Northwestern earned a third-place finish in the team competition. It is the 16th-straight season the 'Cats have placed among the top-three in the conference, finishing with 610 points. Ohio State tallied 650 to earn the conference crown while host Notre Dame edged out the 'Cats with 640.
NU's epée team highlighted the day, earning runner-up honors. The second-seeded Wildcats saw little resisting in the early going, defeating Iowa 5-0 and Lawrence 5-1 before taking a big 5-2 victory over Ohio State in the semifinals. It marks the third-straight year the epéeists have finished second in the conference.
Both the Wildcat foil and sabre teams came away with third place finishes on Sunday. The foil team, lead by conference individual champion Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) earned 5-0 victories over both Chicago and Michigan State before falling in a close 5-3 showdown with the Irish in the quarterfinals. NU then went on to defeat Illinois 5-0 to clinch third-place. It was a similar story for the sabre squad, who defeated Iowa 5-0 and Michigan 5-2 before falling to Notre Dame 5-3. A 5-0 victory over Chicago placed the Wildcats third.
Up next for the Northwestern fencers is a trip to the NCAA Midwest Regional in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, March 7. There they will compete for a spot in the NCAA Championships March 19-22 in University Park, Pa.
