Northwestern Finishes Seventh at Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern concluded the 2009 Big Ten Championships in seventh place after Saturday's action in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wildcats placed two swimmers in championship finals on the last day of competition.
Northwestern finished with 253 points, 37 behind sixth-place Purdue and 17 ahead of eighth-place Ohio State. Indiana claimed the Big Ten team championship with 823 points.
Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) earned Northwestern's top scorer award for the meet. Following is how Saturday's action went down:
Saturday Preliminary Session:
Junior Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) broke her own school record in the 200 back to make the championship final in the event and highlight Northwestern's effort during Saturday morning preliminary action at the Big Ten Championships.
Szymanski started the morning off in a big way for Northwestern, breaking her own school record of 1:57.05 in the 200 back with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 1:56.13 to qualify fifth for the championship final. Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) also earned a second swim with a season-best 2:00.56 to finish 23rd overall and take a spot in the bonus final.
Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) qualified for her second championship final of the meet by ending up sixth during the prelims of the 100 free with a 49.78. Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) and Shelby Johnson (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) both earned spots in the bonus final for the 'Cats. Lightbourne had a career-best 50.68 while Johnson swam a season-best 50.71.
Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) picked up the final scoring spot in the 200 breast finals by swimming a 2:16.55 during the prelims. Both Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) earned bonus final slots with season-best times.
Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) finished 13th overall during the prelims of the 200 fly with a 2:00.13 to pick up a spot in the consolation final, while freshman Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) was 18th with a 2:01.03 to earn a bonus final berth. Rachel Rys (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos) also earned a second swim with the final slot in the bonus heat, swimming a 2:01.98 to finish 24th overall in the prelims.
Heats in the 1,650 freestyle will take place throughout the afternoon, culminating in the last heat at the start of Saturday's finals action at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Saturday Finals Session:
Grigg scored points for Northwestern as the 11th-place finisher in the 1,650 freestyle, which took place throughout Saturday afternoon. Grigg swam a career-best and NCAA `B' cut of 16:29.66.
Szymanski ended up in sixth place overall for the Wildcats with a 1:57.06 in the 200 back finals. She came from behind to top Ohio State's Sam Cheverton by .01 of a second for the place. Engstrom ended up 24th overall with a 2:03.36 in the bonus final.
Wong picked up a fifth-place finish in the 100 free, swimming a career-best 49.62 `B' cut for the 'Cats. Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School), who was 25th in the morning with a career-best 50.77, swam in the bonus final after both Lightbourne and Johnson scratched to focus on the 400 free relay. Masney ended up 23rd overall with a 51.01 in the evening.
Wilson maintained her 16th-place position from the morning in the consolation of the 200 breast, swimming a 2:16.73 in the evening. Patterson was 21st after finishing fifth in the bonus heat.
In the 200 fly consolation final, Shishkoff came in fifth in the heat to take 13th overall with a season-best 1:59.58. Points dropped down to a 2:00.59 in the bonus final to end up 18th overall while Rys finished the bonus race in 24th position.
Freshman diver Carlin Dacey (West Roxbury, Mass./Choate Rosemary Hall), who missed a good portion of the year due to injury, came back to score points for NU on the platform. Her score of 210.75 was good for 15th place in the event.
The Wildcats concluded the meet with a fifth-place effort in the 400 free relay, getting a season-best time of 3:20.22 from the team of Lightbourne, Johnson, Wong and Shishkoff.
