Thursday Prelims Complete at Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern placed four swimmers in scoring finals during Thursday morning preliminary action at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Eight total Wildcats earned second swims after their efforts during the prelim session.
In the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle, sophomore Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) cut nine full seconds off her seed time to finish in ninth place with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 4:44.62. After battling through an injury in the early part of the season, Grigg dropped enough time at the Big Ten meet to headline the evening's consolation final.
Grigg will be joined by junior Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School), who turned in a `B' cut of 4:46.45 to place 11th overall in the preliminary heats.
Though none earned slots in the finals, Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines), Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School) and Kiersten Cooley (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) all swam career-best times in the 500 free prelims.
No Wildcats made it through to the scoring finals of the 200 IM, but freshmen Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) both swam season-best times to earn second swims in the bonus final. Patterson had a 2:01.82 to end up 22nd and Points turned in a 2:01.99 for 23rd place.
Classmate Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) also had a season-best effort with a 2:04.43 to end up 29th overall, while fellow freshman Jenny Wilson's (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) time of 2:07.02 shaved more than 2.5 seconds off of her seed time.
Competing in her final Big Ten Championships, senior Jill Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) recorded the best time of her career in the 200 IM with a 2:13.21 during preliminary action.
Four Wildcats earned second swims in the 50 free, led by junior Emily Wong's (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) berth in the championship final. Wong turned in a career-best and NCAA `B' standard of 22.74 to take seventh place overall. Freshman Shelby Johnson (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) also had a career-best time of 23.07, which was good for the 16th and final scoring spot in the finals.
Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) (23.21) and Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) (career-best 23.26) both will swim in the bonus final after finishing 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the preliminary heats.
Senior Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) did not earn a second swim, but did notch a career-best time in the 50 free prelims with a 23.53.
Thursday evening's finals session gets underway at 5:30 p.m. CT.
