ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern is in seventh place after the first full day of the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., getting its best performance from junior Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) who captured bronze in the 50 freestyle.
EDIT: The scores reported by Michigan on Thursday were incorrect. The correct scores through event seven follow: NU has 118 total points, 13 behind sixth-place Wisconsin and 40 ahead of eighth-place Ohio State. Indiana leads the meet with 250 points. Day two begins with prelims at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 20.
Thursday preliminary session
Northwestern placed four swimmers in scoring finals during Thursday morning preliminary action. Eight total Wildcats earned second swims after their efforts during the prelim session.
In the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle, sophomore Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) cut nine full seconds off her seed time to finish in ninth place with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 4:44.62. After battling through an injury in the early part of the season, Grigg dropped enough time at the Big Ten meet to headline the evening's consolation final.
Grigg will be joined by junior Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School), who turned in a `B' cut of 4:46.45 to place 11th overall in the preliminary heats.
Though none earned slots in the finals, Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines), Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School) and Kiersten Cooley (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) all swam career-best times in the 500 free prelims.
No Wildcats made it through to the scoring finals of the 200 IM, but freshmen Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) both swam season-best times to earn second swims in the bonus final. Patterson had a 2:01.82 to end up 22nd and Points turned in a 2:01.99 for 23rd place.
Classmate Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) also had a season-best effort with a 2:04.43 to end up 29th overall, while fellow freshman Jenny Wilson's (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) time of 2:07.02 shaved more than 2.5 seconds off of her seed time.
Competing in her final Big Ten Championships, senior Jill Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) recorded the best time of her career in the 200 IM with a 2:13.21 during preliminary action.
Four Wildcats earned second swims in the 50 free, led by junior Emily Wong's (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) berth in the championship final. Wong turned in a career-best and NCAA `B' standard of 22.74 to take seventh place overall. Freshman Shelby Johnson (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) also had a career-best time of 23.07, which was good for the 16th and final scoring spot in the finals.
Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) (23.21) and Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) (career-best 23.26) both will swim in the bonus final after finishing 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the preliminary heats.
Senior Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) did not earn a second swim, but did notch a career-best time in the 50 free prelims with a 23.53.
Thursday Finals Session
Grigg raced to a season-best 4:42.91 to win the consolation final of the 500 free by nearly a full second, followed by Shishkoff in 11th place with a season-best 4:45.01. Both of the times were `B' cuts for the Wildcats.
Points and Patterson were unable to improve upon their preliminary times in the bonus heat of the 200 IM, but the pair did move up to place 20th and 21st, respectively. Points tallied a time of 2:02.17 while Patterson had a 2:02.21 in their evening swims.
Wong jumped up to third place in the championship final of the 50 free, again lowering her career-best time with an NCAA `B' cut of 22.55 in the finals. Johnson jumped up from 16th place after the prelims to 12th in the finals with a season-best 23.02 in the consolation heat.
Lightbourne won the bonus final with a 23.22 while Engstrom came in 23rd.
Northwestern took fourth in the day's final event, the 200 free relay. The team of Lightbourne, Wong, Engstrom and Johnson swam an NCAA `B' cut of 1:30.60 for the Wildcats.
