EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week while Wildcat freshman Felicitas Lenz (Altadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) earned Diver of the Week honors following NU's holiday training trip competitions.
Kocsis collected a pair of top individual finishes to lead Northwestern to a 4-0 sweep over host Florida Atlantic (163-71), Florida International (174-49), Clemson (165-72) and Division II Findlay (174-27) last Friday. The meet was held in an outdoor pool during a torrential downpour, the third-straight day of heavy rains in the Boca Raton area.
Kocsis fought through the conditions to record her first multiple-win performance of the year, swimming a 5:02.01 in the 500 free and a 10:21.86 to capture the 1,000 free by more than four seconds. This is the first Big Ten weekly swimming award in Kocsis' career.
Lenz posted three top-five finishes last Friday and Saturday as the Northwestern diving team met UCLA and UNLV in a no-team score, two-day meet in Los Angeles, Calif., for their annual holiday event. Lenz defeated a field of 11 divers to capture the one-meter title, posting a 264.65 for the win. In her first collegiate platform competition, Lenz took second with a 244.60 mark. The freshman Wildcat then defeated all UNLV entries in the three-meter springboard (240.30), finishing fifth overall behind a quartet of Bruins. This is the second weekly diving honor for Lenz in her inaugural campaign.
Northwestern now has won four Big Ten weekly honors through the first half of the 2009-10 season. In addition to Kocsis' award and Lenz's pair, Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) was named Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 24.
