NU Stellar in Singles at Duals in the Desert Saturday

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- On the second day of play at the Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif., Northwestern posted a perfect 7-0 combined singles record between flights one and two and won in straight sets in six of the seven matches.
In flight one, 40th-ranked Samantha Murray cruised past Maggie Mello of Texas, 7-5, 6-4, while fellow senior Lauren Lui (No. 89) defeated UCLA's Maya Johansson 6-3, 6-2. Murray will wrap up her weekend Sunday morning vs. Nina Pantic of UCLA while Lui is set to face Texas' Krista Damico.
Also in the top flight, NU freshmen Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk scored wins to continue their inaugural fall seasons. Turvy edged UCLA's Pamela Montez in the first set 6-4 and went on to win the second 6-2 while Wowchuk dominated Texas' Caroline Larsson to the tune of a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The 'Cats also made their presence known in flight two singles where Elena Chernyakova downed Georgia's Naoko Ueshima, 6-4, 6-3, and Linda Abu Mushrefova defeaed Texas' Maya Zein, 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore Stacey Lee rounded out the singles perfection on the day for Northwestern, beating Christy Andrews of Southern Cal, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Lee will face Ueshima at 8 a.m. Sunday in her final match of the tournament.
NU played just one doubles match on Saturday, with Lee and Abu Mushrefova falling to Cameron Ellis and Naoko Ueshima of Georgia, 8-3.
Also in play on Saturday was NU junior Maria Mosolova, who completed her stay at the 2009 National Indoor Singles Championship in New Haven, Conn., after going 1-1 in the consolation bracket. Mosolova defeated Old Dominion's Nadine Fadhoum, the singles champion out of the Atlantic region, by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Mosolova lost her ensuing match 6-4, 6-0, however, to Duke's Reka Zsilinszka.
Following its completion of the Duals in the Desert tournament on Sunday, Northwestern returns to competition again in January when it kicks off the 2010 spring season by hosting the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston.
