Northwestern Finishes First Day at Duals in the Desert

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Northwestern is one of five elite teams competing in the 2009 Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif., this weekend. At the end of one day of competition, the 'Cats have four singles players and one doubles team alive on the championship sides of their respective brackets.
The tournament is divided into two flights of singles and doubles competition. On the singles side, Samantha Murray and Brittany Wowchuk opened their weekends with wins in flight one singles as 40th-ranked Murray downed USC's 53rd-ranked Alison Ramos, 6-3, 6-3, while Wowchuk won a three-set match over Texas' Amanda Craddock, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In flight two singles, Stacey Lee picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win against Carlene Leyden of Texas while freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova won her opener over Lyndsay Kinstler of USC, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The competitors managed to finish two rounds of doubles play on Friday, with NU's team of Murray and Kate Turvy going 2-0 in flight one with wins over Texas' Sarah Lancaster and Maggie Mello (8-3) as well as Southern Cal's Valeria Pulido and Lyndsay Kinstler (8-6).
