NEW HAVEN, Conn. --  Northwestern junior Maria Mosolova, the top seed in the 2009 ITA National Indoor Singles Championship at Yale, lost her opening-round match to Fresno State's Anastasia Petukhova Thursday, 6-4, 7-5. Mosolova moves into the consolation draw and will play her next match on Friday afternoon.

Mosolova, who recently captured the ITA Midwest Regional singles title, will take on the winner of a consolation match between Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum and Harvard's Holly Cao.

Both Petukhova and Mosolova are from Moscow, Russia, and have known each other for years and developed a close bond. In addition to knowing Mosolova's tendencies, Petukhova utilized her trademark footwork and athleticism in the victory.

Northwestern is also in action this weekend at the 2009 Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif., which begins play Friday morning.

Complete results from the ITA National Indoor Singles Championship is available at the event's official tournament Web site.
