UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern wrapped up the 2009 portion of its schedule in central Pennsylvania as 13 Wildcats recorded top-20 finishes, including four NU fencers which wrapped up the competition among the top-10 in their respective weapons.
The women's epée was the weapon which generated the most success for Northwestern, led by senior All-American Christa French's (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) sixth-place finish. French edged out freshman teammate Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) who placed seventh, while Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) just missed a top-10, finishing 11th. NU also placed three additional fencers in the top-15, with freshman Madeline Amos (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Marymount) and seniors Joanna Niklinska (Granger, Ind./Penn) and Sarah Henning (New Berlin, Wis./Catholic Memorial) placing 13th through 15th.
Women's foil captain Meredith Baskies (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston University Academy) was the top finisher for Northwestern, placing eighth while sophomore teammate Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) finished one spot back in ninth. Sophomore Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) and freshman Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) both just missed cracking the top-10 for the Wildcats, placing 11th and 12th respectively.
Three NU fencers placed among the top-20 in the sabre, highlighted by freshman Chloe Grainger's (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) 14th-place finish. Senior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) checked in at 19th, followed by freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown Friends) tying for 20th.
Head coach Laurie Schiller and his Wildcats now take a bit of a hiatus, returning to action once the calendar changes to 2010. Northwestern will be back on the strips competing at the Penn Duals in Philadelphia on Sat., Jan. 9, 2010. Schiller will once again resume his quest for his 1,000th career victory, currently sitting with 993 in his 32nd season.
