EVANSTON, Ill. -- The first day of the 2009 Wildcat Fall Invitational is complete with two Northwestern doubles pairings still in the running for flight championships. Lauren Lui and Samantha Murray teamed up to win their first three matches of the day as did Kate Turvy and Stacey Lee.
Heavy rains in the Evanston area moved competition indoors to the Combe Tennis Center and prevented the start of singles play. Action is scheduled to resume with the first round of singles Saturday at 10 a.m. outdoors at NU's Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
Murray and Lui opened the day with an 8-2 defeat of Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazzi and Alexa Palen before keeping the momentum going with an 8-6 victory over the duo of Anya Morgina and Madeline Saari-Bystrom from South Carolina. In the semifinals, the NU seniors outlasted Notre Dame's Cosmina Ciobanu and Colleen Rielley, 8-3, to set up a finals match with USC's Ana Zubori and Dijana Stojic.
In flight B doubles, Turvy and Lee took an 8-2 win against Rachel Denny and Maria Nivia of Western Michigan in the first round and ousted DePaul's Kirsten Gambrell and Cali Gustafson in the second by an 8-1 decision. After defeating Big Ten foes Jessica Seyferth and Kathleen Salterelli of Wisconsin in the semifinals, Turvy and Lee will take on Oklahoma's Teona Tsertsverde and Kristina Radan.
Also in flight A, NU sophomore Elena Chernyakova and freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova ended their first day of play on a winning note, being Notre Dame's Kristen Rafael and Christine McGaffigan.
On a different scene, Northwestern junior Maria Mosolova concluded her stay at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Friday, losing her consolation singles match against Southern Cal's Alison Ramos, 6-3, 6-3.
