EVANSTON, Ill. -
Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) has been recognized for his work on the soccer field all season long and now he has been honored for his efforts in the classroom. The Northwestern junior forward was named Friday to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V first team.
By virtue of the first-team honor, Eliason is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration. A communication studies major, he sports a 3.38 grade-point average and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection a year ago.
On the pitch, Eliason ranks fourth in the country with 12 goals this season. The total matches his output from a year ago and ranks as a tie for the second-best single-season mark in school history. His 29 career goals are one shy of the school record of 30 established by Jonathan Hall from 1986-89.
Eliason has twice been honored in 2009 as the National Player of the Week, once by Top Drawer Soccer and again by College Soccer News. The Big Ten Conference has also bestowed its Offensive Player of the Week honor upon him twice this season.
Eliason has helped guide the Wildcats to a 9-2-4 record to date and a current No. 12 national ranking.
Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. CT Sunday as it travels to Michigan.
