EVANSTON, Ill. —
Northwestern looked sharp in its first day of play at the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston on Friday, posting a 4-1 record in main draw doubles competition. The 'Cats, led by top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Maria Mosolova, begin singles play on Saturday.

Two different Wildcat doubles pairings sprinted through their opening matches of the tournament by shutting out their opponents. Senior Samantha Murray and sophomore Stacey Lee ousted Elena Ivanova and Nicole Herzog, 8-0, while NU's Lauren Lui and Elena Chernyakova won by the same margin against Big Ten foes Paloma Escobedo and Gabby Steele of Ohio State.

Lui and Chernyakova own the fourth overall seed at this year's ITA Midwest Regional Championships while Murray and Lee are grouped among the 9-16 seeds.

In the bottom quarter of the bracket, Mosolova worked with freshman Brittany Wowchuk to shut down another Buckeye duo, Fidan Manashirova and Kara Cecil, winning 8-1.

Northwestern freshmen Kate Turvy and Linda Abu Mushrefova won in their debuts at the Midwest Regionals, defeating Western Michigan's Jill Pastunink and Yumi Matsuto, 8-4. In their second-round contest, the NU team was edged 8-6 by Ohio State's Cami Hubbs and Kelsi Haviland.

For each of NU's doubles pairings, Friday marked the first time this season they played together in formal competition.

On Saturday, the action begins at 9 a.m. with third-round doubles matches, to be followed at approximately 10:15 a.m. by the start of main draw singles play. All eight Wildcats are entered in the main draw singles bracket.
