EVANSTON, Ill. -
Matt Eliason netted his 11th goal of the season with 7:23 remaining in the second half to lift the 17th-ranked Northwestern men's soccer team past local foe Loyola Chicago Tuesday evening at Lakeside Field.
After seeing their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday night in a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin, the Wildcats bounced back to improve their overall record to 8-2-4. The Ramblers fell to 3-6-4.
NU got the game-winner with regulation time winding down. Piero Bellizzi played the ball ahead to Kyle Schickel who was able to find Eliason on a perfect cross from the left flank. Eliason was able to turn on a defender and fired a shot past Loyola keeper Peter McKeown for the match's lone tally.
The goal was the 28th of the junior forward's career, bringing him within two of the school's career record.
Eliason came inches away from putting Northwestern on the board 12 minutes in, but his bicycle kick clanged off the right post. Both teams finished the opening half of play with five shots. The Ramblers had three shots on goal to none for the Wildcats, but the hosts had a pair of quality chances.
Schickel nearly gave NU the lead with 20 minutes remaining but saw his shot from the top of the box miss just wide. However, the freshman would come through 13 minutes later as he set up Eliason on the winning score.
Northwestern finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and limited Loyola to just two shots in the second half. Misha Rosenthal made five saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and the 27th of his career.
The Wildcats return to action at 3 p.m. Sunday when they host Indiana. The contest is being televised live by the Big Ten Network.
