EVANSTON, Ill. -- As the final day of action at the 2009 Wildcat Invitational moved indoors due to chilly temperatures in Chicagoland, senior Lauren Lui and freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova each remained unbeaten in flights A and C, respectively. However, a reduced number of available courts indoors prevented the play of championship matches in flights A, B and C singles.
Lui continued her strong play this weekend with a swift 6-0, 6-2 victory against Anya Morgina in the flight A semifinal round. For Abu Mushrefova, Sunday began with an extended battle against Big Ten foe Hannah Berner of Wisconsin. The two split the first two sets (6-3, 3-6) and took the third and decisive set to a tiebreaker, where Abu Mushrefova held Berner without a point to end her first Wildcat Invitational on a high note.
Freshman Kate Turvy also managed to go out with a win Sunday, downing Wisconsin's Jessica Seyferth 6-1, 6-1 for her third win of the fall.
No doubles matches were played after the first day of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday due to time constraints.
Northwestern's next challenge comes in two weeks when it hosts the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Evanston. NU has dominated the event during the Claire Pollard era having won the tournament's singles title each of the last nine seasons. Senior Samantha Murray will have the chance to defend her 2008 title beginning Thursday, Oct. 22.
