EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern came within one set of posting an unbeaten record through two rounds of singles play Saturday at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston. The 'Cats landed two players in the semifinal round of flight A, one in flight B and another in flight C as the tournament enters its final day on Sunday.
Competition is scheduled to begin Sunday at approximately 8 a.m. inside the Combe Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern (2311 Campus Drive off Sheridan Road). Each player is slated to play one doubles match and one singles contest to wrap up the 2009 edition of the Wildcat Invitational.
In flight A singles, Stacey Lee and Lauren Lui will try to win their opening matches Sunday in an effort to set up an all-Northwestern final. Lee defeated Tijana Koprivica of Minnesota 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semis while Lui also took a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Wisconsin's Katya Mirnova in her second match of the day.
In flight B, sophomore Elena Chernyakova opened Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Michigan State's Amy Barton and followed it up with a 6-2, 6-1 dismissal of Minnesota's Alexa Palen. Chernyakova must now go through South Carolina's Josefin Andersson in order to reach the flight B finals.
Also in flight B, freshman Kate Turvy won a 6-3, 6-3 match against Minnesota's Magdalena Wiecha in the first round to set up what proved to be an epic quarterfinal match with South Carolina's Dijana Stojic. Battling for well over three hours, Turvy and Stojic split equal 6-2 decisions in the first two sets and were tied at five in the third before Stojic managed to eke out the last two games to move on to the semifinal round.
Fellow freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova carried the NU banner in flight C, downing a pair of Big Ten opponents in Minnesota's Peta Forsyth and Michigan State's Whitney Wilson to reach Sunday's semifinal match.
