EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Sophie Ewald (Droste-Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)) claimed third place in her first collegiate event at the 2008 Great American Legends Meet held at Purdue Friday night. Ewald's time of 18:59.17 in the 5K race, coupled with senior Carly Brown's (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) fifth-place crossing, boosted Northwestern to a second place finish out of eight teams.
Six Wildcat runners placed in the top 25 for the second consecutive meet to start the season. Freshman Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and senior Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) finished 12th and 14th, respectively, while senior Allison King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) scored points in 15th and freshman Molly Waterhouse (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) placed 25th out of the 67 competitors.
Meet host Purdue took home the team title, toppling (in order) Northwestern, Ball State, Ohio State and Butler to round out the top five.
Northwestern now has two weeks to prepare for the Mississippi State Invitational, an event held at head coach April Likhite's alma mater.
