Michigan Tops NU, 3-0, in Big Ten Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) made 10 saves as Northwestern dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 19 Michigan to open Big Ten play in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday. Michigan jumped out to a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the game off a deflected direct hit and tacked on two late goals to hold on. NU is back in action Sunday when it takes on No. 20 California.
Michigan maintained a presence in the Wildcats' end of the field for much of the day, registering 11 penalty corners compared to Northwestern's three. Sophomore Meredith Way posted scored all three goals for the Wolverines to notch her second hat trick of the season. Junior Heather Wiley and senior Sarah Wilhite both had two assists for Michigan (4-6).
Senior Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown), juniors Courtney Plaster-Strange (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and Elizabeth Dobbs (Wellesley, Mass./St. Ignatius (San Francisco)), and sophomore Sarah Marcincin (Bethlehem, Pa./Blair Academy) all registered shots on goal for Northwestern (5-6) in the loss.

Thursday in Ann Arbor, the Golden Bears knocked off the Wolverines, 3-2, on the strength of an overtime goal by Ashley Glosz. In nine games with California, NU holds a 5-3-1 all-time edge in the series but fell to the Golden Bears, 2-1, in 2007.
