Two First-Half Goals Lead Panthers Past 'Cats, 2-1

MILWAUKEE -- Alicia Herczeg scored late in the second half, but Milwaukee used two first-half goals to defeat the Wildcats Wednesday night, 2-1. Northwestern starts Big Ten season at 7 p.m. Friday against Purdue at Lakeside Field.

With the loss, Northwestern falls to 5-3-1. Milwaukee improves to 8-1-2 with the win. Goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards made seven saves and Herczeg led the 'Cats with four shots.

Milwaukee took four shots and induced one save from Edwards before Herczeg recorded NU's first shot on the night that was blocked. The Panthers broke through with a goal at 19:19 to take a 1-0 lead.

Jenny Dunn forced a save in the 35th minute, but Milwaukee extended its lead to 2-0 late in the first half when Sarah Hagen registered her 11th goal of the year on a shot from 25 yards out.

Herczeg fired a shot high and Jeanette Lorme forced a save in the early stages of the second half, but the Panthers' defense held the shutout until the 87th minute when Herczeg put the 'Cats on the board at 87:44 off a Lorme rebound.

Milwaukee won the shot battle, 14-10, and took six corners to one for NU. Lorme finished the game with two shots on goal. Dunn and Emily Langston also forced saves by the Panthers' keeper.

Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. Fridauy against Purdue at Lakeside Field. The game marks the 'Cats Big Ten opener.
