EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Three Wildcats shoot a four-over 76 to lead Northwestern to a sixth-place finish at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational. Senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) finished the 54-round tournament in a tie for 20th-place after shooting a 15-over 231 (78-77-76).
Entering the final round in a sixth-place tie with Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan, the Wildcats shot a 307 over the final 18 holes to distance themselves, finishing the tournament at 61-over 925 (315-303-307), seven strokes better than seventh-place Michigan and 14 better than eighth-place Iowa. NU even made a run at fifth-place Minnesota, trimming the gap to eight strokes.
Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) also shot a four-over 76 on the day, finishing the tournament with a 16-over 232 (76-80-76) and just missed cracking the top-20, finishing in a tie for 22nd. Sophomore Innahpa Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy) was a stroke back of Lindenschmidt with a 17-over 233 (75-76-79) while freshman Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) was the third `Cat to shoot a 76, completing her first collegiate tournament at 18-over 234 (82-76-76) to finish in a tie for 32nd-place. Freshman Kylie Fuller (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) rounded out the scorecard for Northwestern, shooting a 29-over 245 (82-75-88).
Michigan State, the tournament host, came on strong in the final round to tie Kent State for first-place at 27-over 891, two strokes better than third-place Notre Dame at 29-over 893. Missouri and the Gophers rounded out the top five, with Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Ferris State and Toledo rounding out the field of 12.
The Wildcats will have this weekend off before hosting the Windy City Collegiate Championships Oct. 6-7 at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill. NU will welcome a challenging 13-team field to Chicago, including the likes of Purdue, Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma.
