EVANSTON, Ill. -- One day after No. 1 Maryland lost for the first time in the 12-year history of the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md., Northwestern looked to make it two upsets in two days against the host Terps on Saturday. Maryland had other ideas, however, and defeated NU, 10-1, as junior Elizabeth Dobbs scored for the second straight game for the 'Cats.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle faced a barrage of shots by the Terps and made a season-high 12 saves. In all, Maryland took 34 shots in the game, including 21 in the first half of action.
Kyle's career best for saves in a game, 17, also came against Maryland back in 2006. Through six games in 2008, Kyle has made 37 stops and needs just two more to become the fifth goalie in Northwestern history to reach the 300-save plateau for her career.
Dobbs' goal came at the 14:24 mark of the first half off a feed by sophomore Sarah Marcincin and made the score 3-1 in favor of the Terps. Dobbs is now second on the team in goals this season (three) and has found the back of the cage on eight occasions in her career.
After being upset by No. 7 Syracuse on Saturday, 2-1, Maryland (4-1) earned 14 penalty corners against Northwestern (3-4) and managed to score on five of them. Susie Rowe led Maryland with four goals and one assist while Katie O'Donnell had six assists for the Terps.
NU returns to Evanston for two games at Lakeside Field next weekend. Saint Louis (2-4) comes to town for a Friday afternoon tilt at 3 p.m. before NU takes on Robert Morris (3-4) Sunday at 1 p.m.
