EVANSTON, Ill. -- On July 29, nine returning members of Northwestern's field hockey squad joined Head Coach Kelly McCollum for the third annual "Train with the 'Cats" instructional sessions. The clinics were held at Lake Forest High School (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Arrowhead High School (Hartland, Wis.).
The goal of "Train with the 'Cats" is to provide an opportunity for current Northwestern student-athletes and staff to continue to develop the sport of field hockey in the Midwest region. The clinics are designed to aid high school athletes in their preparation for their own upcoming preseason by giving them the chance to learn from the area's top field hockey players.
"We feel as though `Train with the 'Cats" has been a huge success by adding to the number of opportunities young players in our region have to continue to learn and grow with the game," said McCollum, whose fifth season at the helm with Northwestern begins Aug. 30 at Northeastern. "It's a great experience for the young players to not only see how our athletes prepare, but to actually spend a session training with them in order to prepare for their own high school preseason."
This year's group of Northwestern student-athlete coaches included former local high school standouts, sophomores Olivia Standa (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and Marnie Robbins (Milwaukee, Wis./University School Milwaukee).
"Our players have been training hard all summer to prepare for our upcoming season," McCollum said. "Their involvement in these clinics really showcases their efforts and enthusiasm for our sport."
