Pair of Wildcats Remain Strong at U.S. National Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. -- While the start of the women's fencing season is still a couple of months away, Northwestern continues to remain competitive, as a pair of Wildcats participated in the U.S. National Championships in San Jose, Calif., July 1-10.
NU assistant coach Ed Kaihatsu competed in the Division IA Men's Foil on July 8. With a field of 94 entries, Kaihatsu captured the bronze medal and renewed his "A" rating as a fencer.
Sophomore Irisa Chen (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) competed in the Division II and III Women's Foil, placing 66th out of 109 in Div. II, then following that up with a 19th place finish out of 103 competitors in Divisiion III.
About 5,000 fencers competed at the nationals in the foil, sabre and epee. Ranging from youth all the way to Division IA, the events were categorized by age, skill level and weapon.
Northwestern begins its 2008-09 season hosting the USFA Burton Sat., Oct. 4, at the Sports Pavilion Aquatic Center (SPAC).
