EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior attacker Hilary Bowen (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) was named the WomensLacrosse.com Player of the Week after tallying five goals and adding three assists in helping Northwestern defeat Notre Dame 15-7 in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The eight points tied a season-high for Bowen as the top-seeded Wildcats advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fifth-straight year.
With Northwestern trailing the Irish 5-4 late in the first half, Bowen maneuvered through five Notre Dame defenders to net the equalizing goal with just nine seconds remaining in the half. She was then one of the anchors of the NU offense which outscored the Irish 10-2 in the second half to advance to the round of eight in the NCAA tournament. The five goals and three assists were a mirror of her eight-point performance at Ohio State on March 14.
Bowen leads the 18-1 Wildcats in goals, as her 69 on the season is the third-best single-season performance in NU history, trailing just Kate Oleykowski's 76 goals in 1987 and Kristen Kjellman's 72 in 2006. She had recored at least one goal in 37 consecutive games and at least one point in 41 straight, and ranks sixth on Northwestern's all-time scoring list with 218 points (152g, 66a). A preseason All-American, Bowen was named to the American Lacrosse Conference all-conference first-team.
Bowen and the rest of the Wildcats now prepare to face eighth-seeded Princeton (13-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the NCAA quarterfinals at Lakeside Field. The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals in Towson, Md., Friday, May 23.
