EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern split its first weekend series of Midwest Spring League play at Lakeside Field last weekend, and currently stands in fourth place with five games slated for this weekend.
The Wildcats had an impressive, 2-1, win over Ohio State in their first game of the spring league season, before falling to conference rival Michigan later the same day. To date, Northwestern has three points in the overall standings and remain just four points behind first place, Michigan, who has played in two more games than the 'Cats.
Head coach Kelly McCollum understands the importance of spring play in continuing team development and preparation for the upcoming season. "Our team's participation in the 2008 Midwest Spring League is a great opportunity for our squad to be challenged both physically and mentally," said McCollum.
"The level of opponents we are facing will make us better, and the structure of play will definitely help improve our endurance and mental toughness through physical fatigue."
With the final five games scheduled for this weekend, Northwestern has a great opportunity to gain some much valued playing experience and a chance to move up in the spring league standings as well.
"As a team we learned a great deal in last weekend's league play. We are all eager to make the necessary corrections and focus on improving our areas of weakness going into this weekend's match-ups," explains McCollum. "It will be a busy weekend of games and we are excited to get back out there and have fun playing."
Northwestern will travel to Oxford, Ohio (Miami) this Saturday, April 12, to compete in three spring league games, before heading to Columbus on Sunday, April 13, for its final two games.
