EVANSTON, Ill. -- A handful of Wildcat fencers returned to action Saturday and left their mark on the USFA Illinois Junior Olympic Qualifiers at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC). Competing in the Junior (U20) division, Northwestern placed first through fourth in both the epee and foil, and had the top two finishers in the sabre.
Sophomore Sara Peck (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) won the women's epee, defeating freshman teammate Elizabeth Casano (Alexandria, Va./Geortetown Visitation) to take home the individual title and earn her "C" rating. Freshman Chloe McGuffin (Lexington, Mass./Boston University Academy) placed third while sophomore Nicole Tilley (Chandler, Ariz./Corona) finished fourth.
In the women's foil, sophomore Elizabeth Sachs (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) won the division by beating out freshman teammate Rebecca Grohman (South Orange, N.J./Columbia). Northwestern rounded out the top four with sophomore Irisa Chen (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) taking the third spot and freshman Meredith Barrett (Temple Terrace, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) finishing fourth.
It was more of the same in the women's sabre as sophomore Jill Mahen (Chester, N.J./Mendham) finished in the top spot by edging out freshman teammate Annelise Eeman (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) and maintaining her "C" rating. Wildcat freshmen Kathryn Schoedel (Oak Park, Ill./Illinois Math and Science Academy) and Cristina Mazuski (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) placed fifth and sixth respectively.
After taking some time for finals, the Wildcats head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the USFA North America Cup this Friday through Sunday, Dec. 12 through 14. NU then has some time off before returning to dual meet competition at the Penn Invitationals in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sat., Jan. 10, 2009.
