Northwestern Wins Title at TYR Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 21 Northwestern got another NCAA `B' provisional qualifying cut and Norris Aquatics Center pool record -- this time from junior Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) -- as NU cruised to victory Sunday over Michigan State and Kenyon College on the final day of the TYR Invitational.
The Wildcats finished with 1,630 points to defeat the Spartan's total of 1,259.5 and 22-time NCAA Division III champion Kenyon College's tally of 711. Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) was named Swimmer of the Meet after scoring 111 points in the Invitational, 33 points more than her nearest competitor.
Teams scored points in individual races via three finals heats: an eight-person bonus, an eight-person consolation and a four-person super final for the event championship.
Sunday's finals session began with the 1,650 freestyle, where the Wildcats swept the top three positions. Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) won the race with a 16:57.58, followed by Shishkoff in second with a 17:04.98. Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) was third in a time of 17:08.78.
The 50 fly followed the mile swim, and Northwestern was well represented in the super final. Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) won the super final with a 25.00 to lead a trio of Wildcats in the heat. Alex Kraus (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills) was second with a 25.23, while Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) took third in 25.62.
Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) also led a 1-2-3 sweep in the consolation final of the 50 fly. Her time of 25.57 topped teammates Meghan Cavanaugh (Anchorage, Alaska/East Anchorage) (25.74) and Shelby Johnson (25.95).
In the 200 back, Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) raced to her first sub-2:00 time of the year to win the super final in 1:58.96. Teammate Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) was third with a 2:02.84. Northwestern's lone entrant in the consolation final was Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens), who took fourth in the heat and eighth overall with a time of 2:09.42.
Senior Sara White-Delehoy (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) won the bonus final in the 200 back with a 2:12.33.
Lightbourne and Grigg represented Northwestern in the super final of the 100 free, coming in third and fourth, respectively. Lightbourne was narrowly touched out for second by .03 of a second, finishing with a time of 52.09. Grigg swam a time of 53.02.
The real drama in the 100 free took place in the consolation final, where Wong captured her first-career individual Norris Aquatics Center pool record. The junior narrowly took nine-time All-American Andrea Hupman's name off the board with an NCAA `B' provisional qualification time of 49.74 to win the heat. This performance came after Wong was just .01 of a second shy of earning the pool record in the 50 free on Friday.
Shelby Johnson (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) was second in the 100 free consolation final behind Wong with a 52.01 to out-touch Michigan State's Julie Kahn by .04 of a second. Sheila O'Neill (Dunwoody, Ga./Marist School) and Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School) swept the top two positions in the bonus final of the event.
In the 200 breast, Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) led a 1-2-3 NU sweep in the super final with a time of 2:17.19. Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) was second with a 2:19.12 while Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) finished third in a time of 2:19.88.
Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took second in the consolation final and sixth overall in the event with a 2:21.54.
Eschenburg won the super final of the 50 back for the Wildcats with an effort of 26.26. Her win came on the heels of Szymanski's victory in the consolation final with a time of 27.28. Engstrom won the bonus heat with a swim of 26.42.
Shishkoff, Points and Kraus all qualified for the super final of the 200 fly, but Michigan State's Becca Ebner trumped the bunch to win the heat. Shishkoff was second in 2:03.21, Points took third in 2:03.32 and Kraus was fourth in 2:05.29. Cavanaugh won the consolation final for the 'Cats with a 2:04.96.
Northwestern concluded the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay, getting a time of 3:23.84 from the team of Wong, Lightbourne, Johnson and Shishkoff.
Northwestern will return to action during its annual holiday training trip, this year facing Florida Atlantic and Denver on Dec. 20 in Boca Raton, Fla.
