NU Concludes West Coast Swing with Dual Match Split

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 10 Northwestern completed its one-day tour of northern California with a 1-1 record Sunday, defeating Stanford, 25-15, before dropping a 23-15 decision at UC Davis. Against Stanford, the Wildcats posted wins in six of the first eight weight classes to put themselves on a road to victory.
NU moves to 4-1 in dual competition this season. Stanford is now 1-5 overall while UC Davis improves to 2-1.
Junior All-American and fourth-ranked Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) got things started for Northwestern in impressive fashion at 125, pinning Stanford's Matt Sencenbaugh in 4:54 to up his season record to 6-1. At 133, Robert Joyce (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) succumbed to the Cardinal's Porfirio Madrigal in close fashion, 3-2, with Madrigal scoring all three points in the final period.
Sophomore Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward's) got NU back on track with an 8-2 decision against Timmy Boone at 141 lbs., while senior Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) won his third straight match in a 6-4 overtime decision over Max Rosefigura. At 165 lbs., NU's Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) snapped a seven-match winning streak for Stanford's Nick Amuchastegui with a 6-4 win before redshirt freshman Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) stepped up with an 18-7 major decision and senior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (184 lbs.) earned a forfeit win to put the match away for Northwestern.
Things were not as easy against the Aggies in the second contest of the day for Northwestern, however. After Precin notched a 5-0 win to start the match against No. 9 Marcos Orozco, UC Davis responded by winning five of the next six bouts to take control of the match. Sulzer managed an impressive 10-4 victory against Nexi Delgado at 141, but Gould lost a 9-4 decision to Barrett Abel at 149 and Marella was on the losing end of a 9-0 major decision at 165.
Northwestern freshman standout and California native Jason Welch did not wrestle Sunday as the 'Cats forfeited the 157-pound class in both dual matches.
Herbert had no problem against Davis' Jonathon Clark, recording a fall in 5:35, before John Schoen (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) posted the last win of the day for NU with a 10-6 decision.
Northwestern now enters preparation for its home-opener on Thursday, Dec. 4, when in-state rival Northern Illinois visits Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m.
