EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern University seniors Drew Ratner and Carl Pett were each recognized Wednesday by being named to the ESPN the Magazine Men's Soccer Academic All-America Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
They are just the second and third players in the history of the program to earn Academic All-America honors, joining Jeremy Cook who was a first-team selection in 2003 and second-team pick in 2002.
Ratner, a native of Dallas, Texas, was named a second-team All-Big Ten honoree as a defender last week. He has anchored a Northwestern defense that has posted a school-record 11 shutouts this season and currently ranks sixth in the country with a 0.56 goals-against average. Ratner, who has deferred medical school and graduated this past May, has a 3.62 grade-point average as a psychology major.
Pett, a Northbrook, Ill., native, was a first-team All-Big Ten pick a year ago as a midfielder and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2006. He still has a year of athletic eligibility remaining after redshirting his freshman year. Pett sports a 3.61 GPA while majoring in English with a minor in business institutions. His goal in the second overtime of an opening round Big Ten tournament game against Penn State last week gave NU the win.
Both players have two goals and two assists for six points this season. Ratner has been an Academic All-Big Ten recipient each of the past three seasons, while Pett has earned the honor the past two years.
Northwestern opens NCAA tournament play at home against Loyola University Chicago this Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lakeside Field.
