NU Knocks Out Three Dual Opponents at Boilermaker Challenge

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday where it came away with three dual match wins in the seven-team Boilermaker Challenge. Four NU matmen -- junior Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg), sophomore Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward), freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) and senior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) -- all notched a trio of wins on the day for the Wildcats.
Northwestern got things started with a 23-13 dual match victory against Eastern Michigan, winning six individual matches. Fourth-ranked Precin scored a fall in 2:57 against Jordan McGuire at 125 lbs., while at 141 No. 10 Sulzer posted a 5-0 victory against Corey Phillips.
NU sealed the match with four straight victories from 157 lbs. to 184 lbs., a run that included a 14-2 major decision by No. 16 Welch against Nicholas Hendrick and a 22-13 major decision by No. 2 Herbert over Derek Foore.
It was more of the same for the 'Cats against Kent State in the afternoon session as NU recorded an impressive 21-8 victory over the Golden Flashes, winning seven of 10 matches. Precin, going against a ranked opponent in No. 13 Nic Bedelyon, cruised to a 5-0 decision for his second win of the day. At 149 lbs., senior Marty Gould (Lindenwood, Ill./Niles West) stepped in to post a 5-2 win over Jeremy Depoy, while Welch won his 157-pound contest against Ross Tice by an 11-6 count.
Herbert faced Kent State's talented freshman, No. 13 Dustin Kilgore, and won by a 6-3 decision. Sulzer, Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant), and Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) also scored wins against Kent State.
From there it was on to the third and final match of the day, which resulted in a 30-12 Northwestern win against Tennessee-Chattanooga. NU started off the match with five straight wins, including a 17-0 tech fall victory in 3:50 against Paul Garza. At 133 lbs., Robert Joyce (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) kept things going with a tight 2-0 decision against Stephen Hromeda before Sulzer picked up his third win of the day with a 4-0 decision over Bennett Johnson.
Gould collected another win at 149 lbs. against Kelly Felix (4-0) before Welch posted a 10-1 major decision over Joseph Knox. Herbert recorded a fall against the Mocs' Benjamin Roberson to improve his record to 7-0 this season.
In other action at the Boilermaker Challenge, Purdue registered wins in all three of its dual matches against Eastern Michigan (33-6), Campbellsville (44-0), and Northern Illinois (32-9). Complete results from the day are available at the Purdue Web site with the NWCA Live Scorebook.
Next weekend, Northwestern heads west to California for a pair of dual matches on Sunday at Stanford (2 p.m. CT) and UC Davis (9 p.m. CT).
