SKOKIE, Ill. -- Sophomore Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy) led the way for Northwestern in just her second tournament as a Wildcat, shooting a six-over 222 (76-71-75) to finish in a tie for sixth-place as Northwestern finished 10th at the 2008 Windy City Collegiate Classic at Evanston Golf Club. It marks the first top-10 finish of Tantanavivat's collegiate career.
Entering the day in seventh place, the Wildcats struggled from the opening tee, shooting a 313 over the final 18 holes to fall three spots and finish 10th. NU finished the 54-hole tournament with a 61-over 925 (311-301-313), five strokes back of ninth-place Illinois and seven shots better than 11th-place UNC Wilmington.
Purdue, playing with only four competitors, entered the day with an eight stroke lead over Michigan, and used a 12-over 300 to capture the team championship, shooting a 27-over 891 (301-290-300) and finishing nine strokes better than second-place TCU, which came on strong with their second-straight 297 to finish the tournament with a 36-over 900 (306-297-297). The Horned Frogs edged out third-place Michigan by two strokes, with Arizona (40-over 904) and Oklahoma (45-over 909) rounding out the top five.
Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) just missed cracking the top-20 for the `Cats, shooting a 13-over 229 (77-75-77) to finish 22nd. Senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) came in third on NU's scorecard with a 20-over 236 (80-77-79), followed by freshmen Kylie Fuller's (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) 25-over 241 (78-81-82) and Alexandra Lederhausen's (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) 38-over 254 (90-78-86).
Purdue's Junthima Gulyanamitta ran away with the individual title, shooting a two-over 74 after two 69s Monday to finish with a four-under 212, taking a five-stroke victory over TCU's Brooke Beeler. Beeler shot a one-under 71 over the final 18 holes to finish at two-over 218 (75-72-71) for the Classic. Oklahoma's Ellen Mueller finished third, followed by Purdue's Maria Hernandez and Michigan's Min Yean Tan in a fourth-place tie.
Up next for the Wildcats is a trip to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Lady Northern tournament. The `Cats play the first 36 holes on Saturday, Oct. 18, with the final round Sunday, Oct 19.
