Nemecek Captures Gold at 2008 Remenyik Open

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) highlighted a productive weekend at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) for the Wildcat fencers, posting a perfect 11-0 record during the 2008 Remenyik Open to capture the gold medal in the women's foil. She was one of 11 Wildcats to post a top-10 finish and has yet to lose a match so far this season.
Nemecek finished first among the field of 38 in women's foil, sweeping through pool play with a 6-0 record. She continued her strong play through the direct elimination round, defeating Radmilla Sarkisova 15-10 in the finals. Nemecek finished second at the 2007 Remenyik Open.
NU's freshmen had a big weekend competing in the foil, as Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) finished fourth and Ariel Stein (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School) placed sixth, with Rebecca Grohman (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Camille Provencal-Dayle (St. Paul, Minn.) finishing eighth and ninth respectively. Junior Meredith Baskies (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston University Academy) placed 10th, giving NU more than half of the top-10 finishers in the foil division.
The Wildcats had a pair of top-10 finishers in the women's epee, as junior Joanna Niklinska (Granger, Ind./Penn) went 8-1 to finish third on the weekend, falling to Eleanor Leighton 15-12 in the semifinals. Fellow junior Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) was 7-1 and placed fifth, while twin sister Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) just missed cracking the top-10, finishing 11th.
In the women's sabre, Liz Sachs (Plano, Texas/Greenhill) was the top `Cat finisher, posting an 8-1 record to finish fifth at the Remenyik. Juniors Allie Keller (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) and Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) placed ninth and 10th respectively, with sophomore Jill Mahen (Chester, N.J./Mendham) falling just short with an 11th-place finish.
Northwestern hits the road for the first time this coming weekend, traveling to University Park, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open Saturday, Nov. 1
