Brown Leads 'Cats at Pre-Nationals Meet

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern was one of 80 women's cross country teams that descended on Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday for the Pre-National Invitational on the campus of Indiana State. Racing against the best the nation has to offer, Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) led the Wildcats with a 78th place finish in the Women's White Race in a time of 21:41, her second-best time in the 6K distance. NU finished 31st out of 39 teams competing in the White Race.
Northwestern had not participated in the Pre-Nationals since 2006.
Senior Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) came in second among Wildcats, finishing in 21:59 to claim 107th among nearly 300 runners.
After Fullwood, four consecutive freshmen proceeded to cross the line next for Northwestern in their first collegiate 6K events, headed by Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Droste-Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)) in 22:31. Hallie Busta (Jackson, Ohio/Massillon-Jackson) (23:15) and Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) (23:16) took fourth and fifth among 'Cats, respectively, followed by Rachel Edwards (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Abby Tracy (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake Area).
Florida State and Princeton tied for the top spot in the White Race with 89 points apiece, followed by Michigan with 168 points, with Susan Kuijken of Florida State nabbing first-place in 19.48.2.
Next week, Northwestern competes in the Illini Challenge in Champaign, Ill., to gear up for the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
