EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern opens the 2008 spring season with two dual matches on Sunday against Illinois-Chicago at 2 p.m. and University of Chicago at 7 p.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.

In the fall season, the underclassmen took the spotlight and took victories in the Wildcat Invitational and the Big Ten Singles Championships.

Sophomore captain Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) defeated the No. 3 seed at the Big Tens, then nearly missed reaching the semifinals before falling in a tiebreaker.

Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla./St. Stephen's (Texas)) and David Seyferth (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) also gained experience with victories at the Championships and Wildcat Fall Invitational.

Illinois-Chicago sent five men to the six championship matches at the Valparaiso Invitational, which was its only fall competition. At the ITA Regional Championships, University of Chicago freshman Will Zhang won three of four matches to advance to the round of 16. Three others won two matches while competing there, as well.

"I am eager to start the season. I expect the team to compete and play well on Sunday," head coach Arvid Swan said.
