Top-Ranked Hawkeyes Rally To Down Wildcats, 22-13

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- No. 10 Northwestern opened up a 7-0 lead Sunday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but top-ranked Iowa came back to defeat the Wildcats in their Big Ten opener, 22-13. Northwestern's most dramatic win came at 141 lbs. where redshirt freshman Keith Sulzer upset ninth-ranked Dan LeClere, 9-3.

The win moves Iowa to 14-1 on the year, 3-0 in the Big Ten while Northwestern falls to 5-5, 0-1 in the Big Ten.

The dual started at 197 lbs. where third-ranked Mike Tamillow defeated Chad Beatty by a 12-3 major decision. The senior scored an early takedown in the first period, added a takedown and escape in the second and notched two more takedowns in the third period and earned the riding time advantage. Tamillow gave the Wildcats an early 4-0 lead on the top-ranked Hawkeyes.

Top-ranked Dustin Fox gave NU a 7-0 advantage with a 2-1 win over sixth-ranked Matt Fields. The senior All-American scored the first point of the match with an escape in the second period. Fields scored a third-period escape, but Fox had the riding time advantage to take the bout.

Iowa got on the board at 125 lbs. where third-ranked Charlie Falck used a late third-period takedown to top fifth-ranked Brandon Precin, 5-3. Precin took a brief lead with a reversal early in the third period, but the Hawkeye scored a takedown with 10 seconds remaining to give Iowa its first points of the evening.

Iowa closed to 7-6 when fourth-ranked Joe Slaton downed Eric Metzler, 11-6, at 133 lbs. Metzler trailed 2-1 after two periods of action, but Slaton scored three takedowns in the third period to take the match, 11-6.

Redshirt freshman Keith Sulzer helped NU open up a 10-6 lead with a 9-3 win at 141 lbs. over ninth-ranked Dan LeClere. Sulzer scored an early takedown in the first period, but the period ended at 2-2 after an Iowa reversal. Sulzer trailed 4-2 heading into the third, but he scored a takedown and near-fall.

In a battle of top-five wrestlers at 149 lbs., top-ranked Brent Metcalf defeated fourth-ranked Ryan Lang by a 12-3 major decision to tie the match score at 10-10.

At 157 lbs., 15th-ranked Ryan Morningstar defeated Andrew Nadhir by 6-4 decision to give Iowa a 13-10 lead.

Dominic Marella tied the match score at 13-13 with a win at 165 lbs. over Aaron Janssen, 7-5. Janssen was wrestling in the place of the injured and top-ranked Mark Perry.

Iowa regained the lead with a win at 174 lbs. Second-ranked Jay Borschel scored a 3-1 decision over 15th-ranked Nick Hayes. Borschel scored an early first-period takedown and held onto the lead to take the 3-1 win.

The Hawkeyes ended the dual when eighth-ranked Phil Keddy pinned Adil Kolovic in the first period. The win at 184 lbs. gave the Hawkeyes a 22-13 victory.

The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when they host eighth-ranked Penn State at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
