Northwestern Blazes Past Ohio State, 167-133

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern celebrated Senior Day Saturday with a 167-133 win over visiting Ohio State at the Norris Aquatics Center, earning five NCAA `B' provisional qualifying swims and several other season-best efforts.
The Wildcats conclude the dual-meet season with a 6-4 record in 2007-08, while the Buckeyes fall to 6-4 with their loss, which snapped a five-meet winning streak for OSU.
Northwestern began the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay, getting a time of 3:45.73 from the team of Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen), Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood).
Sophomore Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) pulled away early to win the 1,000 free by more than 13 seconds, swimming a time of 10:00.91. Freshman Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) came in third for the 'Cats, out-splitting Ohio State's Haley Mitchell over the final seven 50-yard lengths to nearly complete the comeback and finish just .24 of a second behind Mitchell with a 10:14.80.
In the 200 free, Hupman recorded an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time with a season-best 1:50.10 to win the event for NU. In the 100 back, the Wildcats' freshman backstroke duo of Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Engstrom swept the top two spots, swimming times of 56.73 and 57.04, respectively. Eschenburg's time was .03 of a second away from her collegiate best.
Fry won the 100 breast with a dominating time of 1:04.25, swimming the first 50 yards a full second faster than anyone else in the pool. Braun then blew away the competition in the 200 fly with an NCAA `B' cut of 2:01.10 to win by 2.7 seconds.
Ohio State picked up its first win of the meet with a victory by Linda Lund-Kristiansen in the 50 free, but Northwestern took second through fourth in the event. Sophomore Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) swam a 24.22 to take second, .06 of a second out of first. Freshman Erin Reilly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) was third with a 24.26 and freshman Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) took fourth with a 24.63.
During the first diving break, senior Leanne Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Buena) was NU's top finisher with a score of 284.25 to take third on the 1-meter board.
Hupman won her second individual event of the meet with an NCAA `B' time of 50.79 in the 100 free coming out of the diving break, falling just .05 of a second short of her season-best time in the event. Sophomore Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) then blazed to a season-best time of 2:00.92 to win the 200 back. Szymanski's time was NU's best of the season, and was .09 of a second away from her first NCAA `B' time of the year.
Ohio State's Megan Alexander won the 200 breast with a 2:20.37, followed in second by Fry with a 2:21.22. Shishkoff swam a 'B' cut to win the 500 free with a 4:52.75.
Braun then won the 100 fly with an NCAA `B' time of 55.06, followed in second by Eschenburg, who swam a collegiate-best time of 56.49 in the event. Eschenburg out-touched Ohio State's Samantha Cheverton by .06 of a second and moved into second on NU's top-times list for the season with her effort.
OSU's Jill Lockhart won the 400 IM with a 4:23.69, followed in second by Shishkoff with a 4:26.78.
The Buckeyes swept the top three spots in the 3-meter diving event to pull within 21 points of the Wildcats in the team race, but Northwestern put an emphatic finish on its dual-meet victory with a 1-2 result in the 200 free relay. The 'Cats' team of Engstrom, Wong, Fry and Hupman took first with a 1:34.84.
Prior to the meet, seniors Braun, Beth Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick), Dumais, Carrera Harris (Shafter, Calif./Shafter) and Hupman were honored by head coach Jimmy Tierney.
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 21-23 at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
