'Cats Finish Eighth at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa-- After taking down two top-ranked teams in Missouri and UT-Chattanooga, ninth-ranked Northwestern dropped the seventh-place match to fourth-ranked Iowa State, 26-15 at the National Duals on Sunday, but placed for the second-straight year -- a first in program history.
In the opening match, NU lost to Nebraska 25-9, but followed that up with the win over UT-Chattanooga, then avenged last year's loss at the Duals to Missouri. Ohio State then topped NU by two, which send the 'Cats to the seventh-place match.
Against Iowa State, five Northwestern wrestlers won their individual bouts, but Northwestern could not overcome a forfeit, which cost them six points, at 133 lbs.
Sophomore Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was the first to pick up a win for the 'Cats at 125 lbs. Senior Ryan Lang followed suit along with fellow seniors Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) at 174 lbs., Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) at 197 lbs. and Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion).
The 9-1 major decision for Fox was his fifth victory of the tournament in as many tries, which included a victory over second-ranked heavyweight J.D. Bergman of Ohio State, who Tamillow defeated last year for the title at 197 lbs. Tamillow, meanwhile, won his fourth match in five tries.
National Duals wrapped up the last non-conference matches for the 'Cats this season. NU opens up the conference schedule on Jan. 27 against Iowa in Iowa City.
Overall at the Duals, Precin, Lang, Hayes and Tamillow finished 4-1, while Fox went unbeaten. Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) and Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) won a pair, as well.
