National Duals Bracket

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa-- In the first round of the National Duals on Saturday, No. 9 Northwestern lost in a 25-9 battle against No. 10 Nebraska, then rallied in the wrestleback and defeated No. 16 UT-Chattanooga 31-11, then No. 8 Missouri 22-19.

In its final match of the day, NU dropped a close 19-17 decision to No. 11 Ohio State, which sends the 'Cats to the seventh-place match tomorrow against No. 4 Iowa State.

In the first match of the day, All-American seniors Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) were once again the bright spots for the 'Cats, taking away victories at 197 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively. Tamillow beat Craig Brester 8-3 and Fox defeated Jon May 4-1.

The only other individual Wildcat victory came from redshirt freshman Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) as he won by a 6-0 decision at 141 lbs. against Robert Sanders. Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sundberg) lost a controversial match to the No.-1 ranked 125-lb. wrestler in the country, Paul Donahoe. Eric Metzler's (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) loss came at the hands of the No. 6 133-lb. wrestler Kenny Jordan.

Against UT-Chattanooga, Precin, who is ranked fourth in the nation, started the dual off with an impressive 9-0 major decision against ninth-ranked Javier Maldonado. Metzler then followed with a forfeit victory at 133 lbs.

Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward) picked up his first win of the day at 149 lbs., as did Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) and Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central).

Tamillow and Fox closed out the Moccasins with a 5-3 and a forfeit victory.

Precin and Metzler continued the Wildcats' hot streak against Missouri, which finished third last year in the NCAA. Precin's won by fall 4:18 into his match, which put the 'Cats up 6-0 early. Metzler's match came against Tyler McCormick, an All-American that defeated Metzler last year. Metzler won the match 5-0. A fall scored by Lang then bumped the score up to 15-3, when the Tigers then got hot and won four of the next five matches to knot the score at 19.

In the deciding match of the dual though, Fox came through with his third victory of the day in a 5-3 decision to keep the 'Cats hopes alive for a match with Ohio State.

Lang highlighted the dual against Ohio State by defeating high school teammate Lance Palmer, who is ranked 10th in the country and took fourth last year in the country.

At 165 lbs., Marella lost a heartbreaker by getting taken down at the buzzer at the end of round No. 3, then fell in overtime. Seniors tried to lead the 'Cats back after the crushing defeat, but it proved to be too big a deficit to overcome.

At 174 lbs., Hayes won a major decision, while Fox won his fourth-straight match, staying undefeated on the season beating the No.-2 ranked heavyweight J.D. Bergman.

"National Duals is a grueling day of wrestling," assistant coach Drew Pariano said. "These are the best teams in the country."

Tomorrow, the 'Cats wrap-up the National Duals with the seventh-place match at 9 a.m.
